A Thoughtful Twist on Pop-Infused Fashion: GCDS’s “Toys for Adults” Collection
In his fall 2024 collection, designer Giuliano Calza presented a more introspective take on pop-infused fashion. Contrary to what the title might imply, there were no sexual undertones; instead, Calza delved into childhood memories and experiences. He recalled asking his father, who was often away on business trips, to bring back “something beautiful.” This sense of nostalgia led him to explore other youthful moments, including both fascination and fear while watching horror movies.
The collection featured playful nods to iconic toys. For instance, Hello Kitty adorned the buttons of a white double-breasted suit, while jacquard embroidery transformed a gown into a camouflage for the beloved Japanese cat. And who says pop choices are limited to casual settings? The infamous killer doll Chucky took center stage, inspiring a kimono-inspired motif used in accessories like a ’90s-style bag. Even the small villain’s hammer from “Good Guys” found new life as a bejeweled clutch.
Calza’s approach was sophisticated yet multifaceted. The journey began with an all-white palette, evoking the purity of childhood. As the looks progressed, they grew darker and more sensual. Despite being a pop-inspired designer, Calza remained attuned to global events. His collection included babydoll dresses in pink or silver Lurex plush, as well as oversized, structured coats that provided armor for the exposed body. Subtle contrasts abounded: leather details merged seamlessly with tailored pieces, and the Morso shoes cleverly masqueraded as simple pumps.
In summary, “Toys for Adults” celebrated the inner child while acknowledging the complexities of adulthood—a harmonious blend of nostalgia, beauty, and contemporary awareness.
