Coperni’s FW/24: Encounter with the Future
In the distant reaches of an Aubervillier TV soundstage, we found ourselves beneath the imposing shadow of a towering black obelisk—a structure that seemed to straddle reality and imagination, much like a half-flipped Asterix comic. Illuminated with a Kubrick-esque glow, it resonated with the haunting notes of John Williams’s “The Conversation,” a nod to Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
Backstage, designer Arnaud Vaillant confirmed the collection’s cosmic inspiration: a full-fledged sci-fi tribute. Star-studded soles left ethereal imprints beneath ‘flying saucer’ dresses adorned with Mars Attacks-inspired skirts. Cable-knit sweaters were vertically sliced, creating a mesmerizing hyperspace blur. Gold-layered silver foil dresses and skirts, reminiscent of space blankets, shed tiny fragments of celestial debris as they orbited the enigmatic obelisk.
The models’ hair, slicked as if with Xenomorph slime, sported fantastical articulated faux-talons—a mirror image of Xenomorph manicures. Faux fur coats and bags, grounded in earthly browns and beige, bore accents of green and blue: traces of alien blood. A fitted black top and white dress featured popper patterns, echoing the charging inputs of future-human battery packs from the Matrix movies.
Micro handbags, encased in Ziploc evidence bags, evoked Mulder’s pursuit of artifacts. And then there was the white dress—a sheer skirt cascading below an attached crisp white cotton shirt—Scully gone wild. Finally, a clutch bag took its form from a clipboard binder, a subtle nod to the enigmatic world of the X-Files.
In this interstellar fashion voyage, Coperni invites us to explore the unknown, where style transcends earthly boundaries and imagination knows no limits. In every gripping sci-fi saga, there exists a Pandora—an astute scientist who foresees impending events before the rest of us. Tonight, that role was impeccably portrayed by Professor Ioannis Michaloudis. Backstage, he unveiled a remarkable creation: a variant of Coperni’s iconic Swipe bag, meticulously crafted from an ethereal blend of 99 percent air and 1 percent silicon nano-something—a material with ties to NASA’s stardust-catching endeavors. While the scientific intricacies sailed over my head, the bag exuded an undeniable coolness. Leon Dame, channeling Jude Law from “Gattaca,” confidently paraded it down the runway.
Amidst the mesmerizing spectacle, two cameramen orbited the models, capturing every stride for the live stream. Their presence, though occasionally vexing, added to the immersive experience. The show culminated with two dresses adorned by feathered hoops at the shoulders, reminiscent of Star Trek’s iconic transporter aura. The truth lay within: Coperni wields cutting-edge technology, seamlessly blending sci-fi inspiration with high fashion.
